Community Libraries of Providence (CLPVD) is seeking to hire two (2) temporary part-time Youth Program Assistant to work on CLPVD’s Readmobile this summer. Under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator and Readmobile Youth Services Specialist, the Youth Program Assistant performs paraprofessional level work providing direct service to patrons, with an emphasis on children, parents/caregivers, educators, and other individuals who provide services to youth, at 5 parks across the City of Providence (Camden Ave., Bucklin, Billy Taylor, Harriet & Sayles and Fargnoli). The purpose of the Readmobile is to support Providence elementary students in maintaining their reading and math skills over the summer months.
Duties: The Readmobile Youth Program Assistant’s specific responsibilities include: Supports Readmobile Youth Services Specialist and other Readmobile staff in all areas of Readmobile service. Deliver successful customer service by responding to the library needs of patrons. Encourage parents/caregivers and youth to visit their community library for library cards and even more services. Plan and present children’s summer reading programming, including read alouds, crafts, games, and other hands-on activities that promote literacy. Collect and maintain library statistics related to CLPVD’s summer reading program. Promote use of the Readmobile through outreach in each neighborhood. Assist with the setup and breakdown of library equipment such as tents, tables, book carts, technology, etc.
Experience and Training: A minimum of one year successful experience working with children preferred, either in a library or other youth serving organization. Required skills and abilities: Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults. Ability to interact with diverse patrons. Ability to travel to off-site locations, such as Providence parks. Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred. Manual materials handling required, up to 35 lbs. Willingness to work outdoors in potential heat to maintain the Readmobile schedule. Experience with the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards is a plus. Must successfully complete a criminal background check.
