Adult Educator (ASL-Proficient)
Reports to: Deaf Services Program Manager
Purpose: The Adult Educator provides instruction to Deaf adults using fluent ASL and visual teaching strategies to build English reading and writing skills. This role supports literacy, communication, and independent living goals through culturally and linguistically accessible adult education.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Design, implement, and evaluate curriculum and lesson plans for Deaf adult learners across varied literacy levels, using learner centered, differentiated, and culturally responsive ASL based instruction.
- Integrate reading, writing, and digital literacy activities that connect to real-life goals such as employment, community engagement, and independent living.
- Facilitate group learning sessions that build critical thinking, collaboration, self-confidence, and active participation within a respectful, supportive classroom environment. Confidence, and active participation within a respectful, supportive classroom environment.
- Use appropriate literacy and communication measures to assess learner skills and progress, provide regular feedback, and adjust instruction to align with individual goals and needs.
- Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, lesson outcomes, and participant progress for program evaluation and reporting purposes.
- Collaborate with program leadership, interpreters, Deaf professionals, and partner agencies to ensure alignment with program objectives and full language/cultural access.
- Engage in outreach and events to raise awareness of the Deaf Adult Literacy Program and strengthen relationships with educators and community partners.
- Contribute to ongoing program improvement by participating in staff meetings to share insights, data, and recommendations for curriculum refinement and evaluation.
- Stay current with best practices in Deaf adult education, literacy instruction, bilingual ASL–English approaches, and educational technology through trainings and professional development.
- Use functional materials (e.g., forms, letters, applications, online tools), technology, and online learning tools to enhance instruction.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support the success of the Deaf Adult Literacy Program.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Fluent in American Sign Language with strong understanding of Deaf culture and community
- Bachelor’s degree in education, Deaf Studies, ASL, or a related field or equivalent experience
- Minimum of two years of experience teaching or tutoring adults or individuals with varied literacy levels
- Knowledge of adult learning principles including learner-centered, functional, and contextualized instruction
- Ability to design and deliver differentiated lessons that address multiple learning levels
- Experience with digital learning tools and accessible online technology
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and lifelong learning
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Performance will be reviewed at the end of the first cohort and periodically thereafter to ensure services meet the expectations of the contract.
Salary: $150/hr
Hours: Part-time/10 hours per week
Location: On-site
