Volunteer: 'Roots and Wings' Afterschool Instructor

MCSRI is looking for responsible, joyful, and creative ‘Roots and Wings’ After School Program Instructors for our toddler (18 months to 3 years) and primary (3 to 6 years) classrooms. Qualified candidates have experience working in an afterschool program or an early childhood classroom, and have experience with or interest in Montessori teaching and learning. Work as a Roots and Wings instructor requires staff to be comfortable leading the program during non-school hours. Staff are also expected to take ownership for set up, facilitation, and clean-up of the afterschool program.

The Roots and Wings program activities are typically focused on science, art, and nature. The classroom environment is prepared for children to engage in both teacher-directed projects as well as child-directed choices.  Afterschool instructors work part time from 2:15 pm to 5:45 pm, Monday through Friday during the 2026-2027 school year (September 1 through June 16). Roots and Wings programming runs from 3:00 pm-5:15 pm. Afterschool staff schedules are designed to accommodate program set up and clean up.

Qualifications:

Experience or education in: art education, art, early education and/or elementary education, child development, music, environmental science/STEM or other relevant or related fieldsPrevious experience working with children ages 18 months - 6 years oldInterest in learning about Montessori pedagogy and philosophy and early childhood best practicesCommitment to MCS RI mission, social justice, and equity in education  Spanish Language fluency a plus, but not required
