6-month probationary period)

CLPVD is seeking a Facilities Steward (M4) to clean and perform minor repairs at Knight Memorial Library. They will also maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and library visitors by providing a warm welcome and orientation to library visitors; establishing a visible security presence in and around the library; and, by swiftly, calmly, and firmly enforcing the Behavior, Safe Child, and other CLPVD policies and responding to emergencies/incidents.
Essential Job Functions:
Cleaning & Maintenance:
Daily/Weekly Tasks:
● Dust shelves, furniture and fixtures;
● Sweep, dry mop and vacuum floors daily;
● Wet mop all floors/stairwells weekly;
● Wipe down all surfaces, including table tops and desks;
● Empty waste baskets and discard other materials;
● Set out recycling bins;
● Clean rest rooms and staff lounges;
● Set up and break down meeting rooms and other spaces for library events, classes, and programs;
● Pick up trash in the library and on library grounds;
● Clean and remove trash & recycling from afterschool meal service (vacuum as required);
● Replace paper goods, soap and other toilet articles.
Scheduled tasks as assigned by Operations Director:
● Strip and wax floors;
● Vacuum and shampoo carpets for routine cleaning and, as needed, to remove stains;
● Clean windows;
● Sweep and clean stairwells and elevators and/or excessive indoor dirt caused by inclement weather;
● Other duties as assigned within classification.
Seasonal Responsibilities:
● Assist with snow removal by pre-treating walkways and keeping up with snow clean up (walkways, parking lots, and steps) during the day while the library is open.
● Maintain outdoor spaces on a weekly basis: cut the grass; weed; and trim trees (Spring, Summer, Fall).
Maintenance Tasks:
● As requested, serve as point person for contractors as directed by the Operations Director;
● Move furniture, books, or other items as requested, within the library or between libraries;
● Assist with de-cluttering and removal of outdated items;
● Assemble/disassemble library furnishings;
● Hang artwork or displays;
● Change lightbulbs, batteries, filters; empty de-humidifiers;
● Attend to clogged toilets or other basic plumbing tasks (i.e., vacuuming up water);
● Safely clean up biohazards (e.g., vomit);
● Perform basic repairs utilizing hammer, nails, electrical tape, or other basic tools;
● May deliver afterschool meals from time to time;
● Other duties as assigned within classification.
Safety:
● Welcomes patrons and provides a general orientation to the building.
● Interacts with and builds relationships with library users to promote constructive, cooperative, and positive interactions with library staff and other patrons.
● Maintains patron behavior policy as part of a staff team; reports all issues to the Supervisor.
● Provides for the safety and security for all persons (staff and library visitors), and CLPVD property.
● Patrols and monitors the interior and perimeter of the premises to observe and identify potential safety risks, security risks and undesirable conditions.
● Monitor restrooms of the library, including managing keyed access.
● Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to, safety hazards, fires, medical emergencies and threats to life and/or property
● Complies with organization and department policies and procedures.
● Other duties as assigned within classification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Ability to speak and read English.
● Strong desire to work in a collaborative, team-based working environment.
● Must possess strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
● Able to de-escalate problems and conflicts and remain calm under pressure, including emergencies.
● Ability to interact with diverse patrons including different ages, languages and cultures.
● Positive attitude towards and willingness to support community members experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental health challenges in the library.
● Enthusiastic about supporting youth in using the library constructively.
● Able to lift up to 51 pounds.
● Skill in the use of basic hand and electric tools and familiarity with parts and materials is required.
● Physically able to push, lift, bend, stoop, kneel, and work with repetitive motions.
● Use of ladders and climbing on equipment up to 12 feet high will be required to maintain equipment.
● Valid RI driver's license and vehicle to drive short distances between libraries.
● Required to have an MVR check performed every 2 years and have a BCI check done as outlined in the CLPVD policies.
Experience and Training:
High school graduation or equivalent. Experience in cleaning commercial buildings necessary. Additional training will be provided by the Operations Director. Must attend security training as required.
Schedule:
40 hours per week: Monday - Thursday, 12:00 – 9:00 PM (1-hour meal break); Saturday 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM (1- hour meal break). Fridays off.
